WEATHER UPDATE:
The roads are clearing the Ridgewood Public Library will be open—so our Monday night General Meeting and presentation will proceed as planned! See you there!

Make sure to arrive early as parking may be a little crowded (mid-winter finals at the schools). We'll try to be there early too so we can enjoy a cup of coffee before the presentation kicks off.

FYI, we may offer this topic in February as a webinar. If you can make it out, please do, as we'll have good handouts and some free magazines to take home!

Speaker: Michelle D. Novak

There are as many ways to organize genealogical information as ancestors in our family tree—and most find they need to improve their methods as their research grows.

How do you stay on top of all your files? How can you best organize your files so that they will be of use to others in your family? What is the 'cloud' and why should you be so paranoid about making backups? What are 'legacy' issues with digital files? Why is a family-friendly system so important? We'll look at all of these issues and address as many as time will allow!

This talk will explore some of Michelle's favorite methods for digitizing, naming, and organizing your files; discuss common pitfalls to avoid; present some ideas for helping your research live beyond technology; and make your research ‘family-friendly'—most of which won't cost you a dime!

It will be a jam-packed evening of ideas that will, hopefully, shake up your conceptions on how you're managing your family information and improve your organizational techniques. Whether you are a seasoned researcher or just starting out, you'll find this talk eye-opening.

Michelle D. Novak is a Trustee of the Genealogical Society of Bergen County and the Genealogical Society of New Jersey. In her "day job," Novak runs a brand design studio in Manhattan, and as part of her company's work, she manages thousands of client project files and millions of assets. In struggling with her own genealogical research, she discovered that some of the methods she uses in her day-job port nicely into her research.

In addition to her talk, Michelle will be providing detailed and extensive handout materials—and maybe even some cookies. Please note that the RPL advises that people arrive early as it is a busy time at the Library (mid-term finals at the schools). So, come early, have a coffee, and join us in starting your new year right!
