Charles DeWitt was born in 1727 at Hurley, NY.1,5 He married Blandina DuBois, daughter of Garret DuBois and Margaret Elmendorf, on 20 December 1754 at Kingston, NY.1,5,3 He died on 27 August 1787.1
Charles inherited flour mills at Green Mill (Kill?) under his uncle's, Charles DeWitt, will. The flour turned out by these mills was of exceedingly fine quality. A request from George Washington came for an order of 10 barrels of this flour for Mrs. Washington, who had requested it.5,4 Name variation: Col.1,2,3,4 He was in 1751 appointed manager of the great Livingston Manor. Robert R Livingston was Chancellor and had a lifelong association and friendship with Charles DeWitt.
Charles served in the Provincial Congress for almost 10 years. He was a member of the committee that framed the constitution of the state of New York. It was at this time that he drew up his will and the opening sentence indicates his state of mind: 'Considering the uncertainty of life especially in these times of trouble, and as I am in a few days to go down to New York, where I may fall a victim to the British tyrants who are arrived to invade the metropolis, it being uncertain whether I ever return do make and publish my last will, etc.'
He was colonel of the militia for the regiment from northern Ulster County.5

Charles Gerrit DeWitt was born on 7 November 1789 at Greenkill.1 He married Catherine Bogert Godwin, daughter of David Godwin and Catherine Waldron, on 25 April 1811 at Hoboken, NJ.1 He died on 12 April 1839 at Newburgh at age 49.1
