Patrick Lavelle was buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Woodside.1 He was born in 1827 at Forkhill, County Armaugh, Ireland.1 He married Rose Fitzsimmons in 1855 (New York, NY.)1 He married Catherine Bough in 1867 (New York, NY.)1 He married Margaret circa 1876 (,NY.)1 He died on 8 March 1900 at New York, NY.1
     Patrick Lavelle 1826-1900

According to his own testimony (stated in his application 27672 when opening an account at the Emigrant Savings Bank on Dec. 29, 1861 in N.Y.C., and a second account -36400- on September 19, 1863 when he was still living at 356 Broome St.), Patrick Lavelle was born in 1826 in Forkhill, County Armagh, Ireland. His was the son of Michael and Rose, by trade a carpenter, and arrived in New York in 1849 on the 'Falchion'.
The potato blight first appeared in Ireland in 1847 and destroyed most severely the potato crops of the west coast of Ireland, later affecting other parts of the country at different times. In County Armagh the effects of the Famine were not as severe. The chief crop in that area was not potatoes but flax which is used to make the still high prized Irish linen. Armagh is part of Northern Ireland, where the majority of the population was Protestant.
Patrick's descendants always implied that he came from Connemara in western Ireland, where there are many Lavelles- a name which can be traced back to the Norman invasion of Ireland in 1174. The fact that he came from Northern Ireland was not something he probably spoke of often to his large Catholic family. Most immigrants were only too happy to forget their impoverished pasts as they made better lives for themselves in the U.S. If he and his family were directly affected by the Famine, or if he emigrated because as a Catholic his prospects were not good, can only be surmised.
Patrick was not found in the 1850 U. S. Census. It was not until 1855, six years after his arrival in New York and the year he first married that his name appears in the New York City Directory as Patrick Lavell, a carpenter living at 119 Spring Street. Nothing is known of his mother or if he had any siblings, but a Michael Lavell - possibly his father with whom he may have been living - had been listed in 1853 living in 223 Elizabeth St. in lower Manhattan. It is likely that before 1853 they lived in a boarding house, where individual tenants were not listed by name.

The First Marriage
In 1855 Patrick married 19 year old Rose Fitzsimmons, who was born in Ireland in 1836. Their parish church was Old St. Patrick's, at Mulberry and Mott Streets. In their nine years of marriage, Rose gave birth to Michael* in 1856, Rose in 1858, and Mary, probably in 1859 and Peter* who was born in 1860 when the family was living first at 336 Broome St. They then moved to 856 Broome St. where Catherine was born in 1862. Catherine died at the age of 2 in December 1864.
When Rose died in May of 1864 she left Patrick with many small motherless children: Michael 8, Rose 6, and Peter 4. (How long Mary lived was not recorded. Catherine survived her mother by only seven months.) The causes of the deaths of Catherine and Rose are not known, but with the poor sanitation of the times and disease rampant, unfortunately the deaths of infants and mothers in childbirth were all too common at the time.

The Second Marriage
For three years Patrick remained widowed. Between 1865 and 1870 the family lived at 356 Broome St. In 1867 at age 31 he married 35 year old Catherine Bough. This marriage produced five more children: George was born in 1868, and Margaret was born in 1869.
The 1870 Census (reel 992, 1 Enum. District, 14th Ward, NYC, p. 34) found the family on Broome St., where earlier spellings of Lavell now became Lavelle. Listed in 1870 were:
Patrick Lavelle, carpenter, age 42, born in Ireland
Wife Catherine, age 27
Michael 14
Rosanah (Rose Anna) 12
Peter 10
Mary ( Mary would have been 11 in 1870 - no age is given for her. Margaret, Catherine's daughter, was born
in 1869 and is not named- yet she is in the 1880 Census and Mary is not.)
George 2
Sarsfield Patrick was born in 1871. His unusual name later (in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses) appears as his middle name- Patrick Sarsfield. He was apparently named for the famous Irish patriot Patrick Sarsfield (1650-1693) who was made a general in the French Army, later defended Limerick and died at Landen.
Francis was born in 1872 and James in 1873.
Between 1868 and 1870 in addition to his home address, business addresses were found for Patrick, first at 125 Elizabeth St., and then at 251 28th St., indicating that he had become prosperous enough to maintain his own business establishment.
Catherine died in 1874 after seven years of marriage, leaving Patrick with her own five and Rose's three children orphaned once again. Now Patrick was left with at least eight motherless children: Michael 18, Rose 16, Peter 14, George 6, Margaret 5, Sarsfield 3, Francis 2, and James just one year old. The family was then living at 236 Broome St.

The Third Marriage
Not surprisingly, once again needing someone to mother his brood, Patrick two years later married Margaret, another immigrant who was born in Ireland in 1843. Twenty-four years younger than Patrick, Margaret at 33 became his third wife in 1876 and the mother of Agnes in 1877 and Helen (Ellen) in 1880.
The 1880 Census (vol. 60, ED 500, Sheet 12, line 17) found the family had moved uptown to 121 E. 28th St. and consisted of:
Patrick Lavelle, white, male, age 45 (actually 53) born in Ireland
Margaret, wife, age 36, born New York
Agnes D (daughter) age 3, born NY
Ellen D age 1/12, born NY
Rosanna (Rose Anna) D, age 22, born NY
Peter S (son), age 20, born NY
George S, age 12, born NY
Margaret D, age 10, born NY
Sarsfield S, age 9, born NY
Frank S, age 7, born NY
James S, age 6 born NY
Catherine Lynch, age 75, b. Ireland (a relative? At 75 she would have been too old to have been a servant, yet she was not buried in the family plot)
Fourteen years later Loretta was born in 1894, dying at age 9 months and and buried in May 1 1895, a year before her mother Margaret who died at the age of 53.
By this time Michael had been an ordained priest since 1879 and had become the rector of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Rose now 38, had married John Mullen. Peter 36, had married Mary Bowe.
The children of the second marriage were now also adults: George was 28, Margaret 26, Sarsfield 25, Francis 24 and probably by then a seminarian, and James was 23.
Of the third marriage Agnes was 19 and Helen 16.

The NYC Directory lists the family at 121 Lexington Ave. by 1898, Patrick's occupation now given as contractor-builder-carpenter. Relatives remembered the house at this address, which was said to have contained furniture that had been built by Patrick. It was located on the east side of Lexington Ave. between 28th and 29th Streets, the only one with a stoop, and was around the corner from St. Stephen's Church. Patrick's business address was close by, at 251 28th Street. 'He was known to have been a contractor and a man of moderate means, maintaining a comfortable home for his large family.' (1983 letter from St. Joseph's Seminary where his eldest son Michael studied.)

Patrick died on 8 March 1900 of appendicitis at the age of 73 in his home on Lexington Ave.(Death Certificate #8310).
. Obituaries in New York Irish American newspapers (The Irish World, American Industrial Liberator) listed all of bishops and priests who attended, led by his sons Msgr. Michael Lavelle and Rev. Francis Lavelle, but there was no mention of his birthplace in Ireland, and the year he arrived was given incorrectly as 1848..
The 1900 Census (v.151 ed 497 Sheet15 line 6) shows that one son remained living in the Lexington Ave. house in the month after his death:
Patrick Sarsfield Lavelle, b. Sept. 1870, age 29, b. NYC E29th St.
Emma S., wife, b. Feb 1880, age 21
Andrew Buchanan FL (father in law) b. Aug 1830, age 69, born Ireland

To bury his deceased family members, on January 1860 Patrick purchased in Calvary Cemetery Section 3, Range 28, Plot N graves for:
Michael Lavelle, 60 born Ireland, bur. 29 January 1860 (his father?)
Mary Lavelle, 65 born Ireland, bur. 31 January 1860 (a step-mother? aunt?)
Rose Lavelle, 28, born Ireland, bur. 23 May 1864 (his first wife)
Catherine Lavelle, 2, born NY, bur. 6 Dec. 1864

Upon the death of Catherine, his second wife, in 1874, Patrick purchased a larger plot in Calvary Cemetery, moving those who had died earlier into Plot C, Range 6, Section 7. The data given about those buried there has provided much information about the Lavelle family. A Julia Harvey who died December of 1882 could possible be the mother of Patrick's third wife Margaret, whose maiden name is not given.
Also in the plot are a Rose Reilly, who was born in Ireland and buried in the plot in 1896 at the age of 90, and Eugene Reilly most likely her son, who was born in the U.S. and died at the age of 64 in 1902. The relationship of the Reillys to the Lavelles has not been established. An asterisk next to the name of Helen Marie Lavelle, who was buried October 24, 1955 at the age of 90, indicated that she was also known as Margaret Burns- her death date does not correspond to any of Patrick's known children, possibly she was a remarried widow of one of his sons.

The Lavelle plot in Calvary has one of the tallest gravestones in that section with an inscription reading:
In Memory of Patrick Lavelle, d. March 8 1900
Rose Lavelle d. May 21 1864
Catherine Lavelle d. April 15 1874

He was married to Mary Bowe by 1889.

Peter Lavelle was appointed by Mayor Gaynor as a member of NYC Board of Education 12 Sep 1912 to 12 Jan 1916 (confirmed in a letter from NYC Bd of Ed, 17 Jun 1980). This appointment could well have been influenced by the fact that his brother, Msgr.Michael Lavelle was rector of St. Patrick's Cathedral.

When his son Francis was married on June 25,1921, he was living at 685 E.170th St., according to to the announcement in the paper.

Michael Lavelle, Rector of St. Patrick's Cathedral, died suddenly yesterday afternoon of heart disease. Mr. Lavelle was inspecting property in which he was interested at 480 Mott Ave.,the Bronx, when he was stricken.
Born in lower Manhattan sixty-three years ago, Mr. Lavelle was educated in the parochial schools. Under Mayor Gaynor, he served as a member of the Board of Education.
Mr. Lavelle is survived by his wife, two sons, Francis and George, and a daughter, Mrs. William Dougherty.

Another local NY newspaper obituary(a clipping with the name of the paper -local? Diocesan?- not shown was found among his deceased daughter in law's effects):
Funeral of Peter Lavelle Attended by Many Friends
Attended by Archbishop Hayes, five monsignors of the Catholic Church, more than 30 priests and nearly 1,000 people, the funeral of Peter J. Lavelle, 55 (??) 685 E. 170th St., Bronx contractor, was held at the Church of St. Thomas Aquinas, 1903 Daly Ave. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery.
Lavelle died suddenly Monday while inspecting work on a building in the course of construction at 480 Mott Ave. Death was due to heart failure.
A solemn high mass was celebrated at the church by Right Rev. Monsignor Michael J. Lavelle, brother of the deceased Bronxite, who was assisted by Rev. Francis Lavelle, another brother, as deacon, and Rev. Francis Barry as sub-deacon. Rev. Denis Coyle, pastor of the church, with his assistants, Rev. Daniel Sullivan and Rev. Nicholas Rimelli, also assisted.
Archbishop Hayes with the five monsignors remained within the altar rail during the mass as did many of the priests present. All were robed in black cassock and white surplices.
Among the nearly 1,000 others at the mass, were representatives of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Benovelant Legion and other organizations with which the Bronxite was affiliated.
Archbishop Hayes with the monsignors journed to the cemetary and participated in the services for the dead at the grave, an unusual honor. The monsignors present were Right Rev. Daniel Burke, Francis Wall, William Livingston, Joseph Dineen and John Evers. Pastors of practically all the churches in the borough were present with those from churches in the entire city.
